III. Discussed the shooting which occurred on the night of the 27th – 28th.

è We need to diffuse tensions over the issue. Rumors are spreading and some students are prepared to take possibly violent action against others.

è What we understand happened (confirmed by Ms. McGee):

ð The student in question was supposedly under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

ð He called the 911 number and allegedly told officers that he was going to kill people.

ð They arrived at his home and he emerged armed with knives or a weapon of some sort.

ð He was shot by an officer who responded to threats made by the young man in question.

è Rumors to defuse:

ð That a specific student provided him with laced drugs and caused his death.

ð That the said provider of drugs should be punished.

ð That this was a particular hate crime by the police officer and that it is totally comparable to the recent shooting of another young man in another state.

è The grieving process is difficult and often begins with shock, denial, and then anger. We want to help people through their anger by providing information to dissuade rumors and to provide emotional support to people who are distraught by the events.

è Using the peer helper model, we want to help these students by:

ð Approaching students who may need help

ð Accepting to help students who may need help.

ð Listening to their story and helping them find balance and to avoid pointing fingers in order to place blame.

ð Messages from people, who knew him, like Isaiah’s message, are things that are helpful.

Ø We may plan something for the pep rally this Friday.

o There is a positive influence in that people may avoid drugs because of this incident.

IV. As a symbol of solidarity and of support we will wear aqua/ light blue ribbons around our wrists. This will show others that we are here for them and that we can be approached to talk to. We will pick these up before school in the ROTC room on the 29th.

We will offer peer mediation all day in 609, if you meet someone who is in need of aid, bring them there.
